The mark of a Legend

Hello dear readers! Welcome to another musical edition of this blog. Are you sit and comfy? Good, let's begin then.

Today I decided to bring you one hit of a true worldwide music legend, a "sacred monster" who needs no introduction. I'm talking about Bob Dylan and the hit " Beyond Here Lies Nothin' ". Well, first of all I got to say I'm not exactly a fan of Bob Dylan, I'm not sure what makes me dislike his music, maybe it's his voice. Nonetheless, I acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the North-American singer/songwriter to Music, whose extensive legacy will endure forever. He's a source of inspiration of numerous artists, many of them well known to the grand public, who made countless covers of Bob Dylan's hits and had them included in their own repertoires.

Bob Dylan is an all around artist. Besides composing his own songs, he does the lyrics, sings and play instruments like the guitar, piano or harmonica. He's also an established poet and painter. Active in the world of Music since 1959, Bob Dylan won numerous awards, from Grammys to Golden Globes, and was inducted in 1982 into the Songwriter Hall of Fame and in 1988 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There's even a road with his name in his home state of Minnesota, USA, since 2008. Well, there's no point for me going further dissecting the man and the artist, since he's well known to all of you and otherwise the post would be gargantuan, because of the myriad of things to say about Bob Dylan.

Let us focus, then, on the hit called " Beyond Here Lies Nothin' ". I must say I've listened to this song countless times and I can't stop myself from listening and singing it, it's pure genius! It's included in Bob Dylan's 33rd (!) album titled Together Through Life, released in 2009, hitting the number one spot in the charts of countries like USA, UK, Austria, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Argentina, Belgium or Portugal. The musical genre of the song is somewhere between Folk Rock and Blues and it was nominated for the Grammy Award for "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo" at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010. In TV, this song was used in the final episode of Season 2 of (amazing!) TV series True Blood, whose title was precisely " Beyond Here Lies Nothin' ".

The official video I present you is directed by movie stunt and stunt double Nash Edgerton with Joel Stoffer and Amanda Aardsma in the acting. The video portrays an extremely violent struggle between man and wife, so the images are not exactly pretty!

Apparently, Bob Dylan drew his inspiration from a Blues hit of the 50s by North-American musician Otis Rush, titled "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)". Since the hit is very good, it deserves to feature here and be heard by all of you dear readers (that and also because I'm extremely generous!). Compare the two songs and listen the resemblances here and there. To me, despite some obvious initial similarities, it seems the two carry on through different paths which, in the end, results in two very different songs. See you next time!

I Love You

Hello my dear readers! Forgive me for the intermission, but I wasn't able to update the blog these days.

Today I propose to you a Saint Valentine's Day special edition. I know it was yesterday, but Valentine's day is whenever we want to, isn't it? I don't pay any extra attention to this particular day, but that does not stop me from doing a special post for the lovebirds that are reading this, right? Good! Well, today I'm proposing a romantic itinerary for those who want to spend a wonderful day with their lover, everything included. This itinerary is made of 4 stages. You can thank me in the end!

STAGE 1: Declare your Love - In this day, like any other day, what could be better than a heartfelt declaration of love? To help you get in the mood, here goes a Bossa Nova style declaration of love, titled "It's Impossible" by Le D. feat. Rene y Rene. This track can be found in several musical collections, in my case I found it in the album Intelligent Music Favorites, Vol. 5. Exceptionally for this tune, I leave you the lyrics after the video.

It's impossible...
Ask the sun to leave the sky,
It's just impossible...
It's impossible...
Ask a baby not to cry,
It's just impossible...
Can I hold you closer to me
And not feel you goin' through me,
Split the second,
That I never think of you,
Oh! how impossible...
Can the ocean keep from rushin' to the shore?
It's just impossible!
If I had you, could I ever want for more?
It's just impossible!
And tomorrow, should you ask me for the world,
Somehow I'd get it...
I would sell my very soul,
And not regret it...
For to live without your love,
It's just impossible!

Beautiful, isn't it?

STAGE 2: Dinner - Obeying the traditions for this day, one thing that can't be amiss is a candle lit romantic dinner, whether at home, in a restaurant or anywhere else. Don't forget to include ginger, oysters or strawberries, among others, in your menu, it's sexiness and aphrodisiac power are well appropriate! Of course, the one thing that must be present is a matching soundtrack. Calm and heartwarming music is the ideal. Like, for example, the tune "Sentimientos" by Argentinian musicians Andrés Linetzky & Ernesto Romeo. It's a fabulous example of a progressive electronic tango, in which the violin is out of this world. It can be found in the album Claude Challe: The best of.

STAGE 3: Dance - After a romantic meal of this caliber, together with the former soundtrack, nothing could feel better than to prolong the pleasure by sharing moments and memories with each other alongside a good bottle of wine, followed by a few dance steps. The music should be calm, sensual and somewhat rhythmic, so the two can engage in an embraced dance. As an example, I present to you "Bitter Sweet", a fantastic Chillout, Downtempo and "warm" tune by London born songwriter/producer DJ Gary B. (Gary Butcher). The vocals of the song are performed by Gary B. himself (who currently resides in Ibiza). This track is part of the album Café del Mar by Gary B. - Step into the Sunshine, of the very famous Chillout collection Café del Mar, from Ibiza. Oh dear (insert sigh her), this is going well...

STAGE 4: Making Love - Ok, after showing all our love for our lover in the previous stages, why not actually doing it, even because the oysters are starting to produce their effect, right? And why not making love to the sound of some quite mellow, languid and intimate music? Well that's exactly what I propose, and for that I present to you two of the very best sexy and sensual tunes. The first one is called "A Thousand Kisses Deep", a Smooth Jazz tune virtuously played by North American trumpet player Chris Botti. The original version belongs to Leonard Cohen, but I prefer the one I'm presenting here, which can be found in the album Smooth Jazz Café, Vol. 6. The trumpet is so wonderful it causes shivers down one's spine!

Finally, and to maintain the previous mood, I present you "Far Away" by Trumpet Thing. It's a Chillout tune that oozes sensuality from each and every single pore! You have to listen to believe! It can be found in the worldwide famous collection Buddha Bar, more specifically in Buddha Bar Vol. V or in "best of" Buddha Bar Ten Years. Oh, from minute 3:15 what do you hear? Yep, there goes again the trumpet in all its splendor. Compare this one to the previous tune by Chris Botti. Can you see the outcome of the pattern "calm/languid music + trumpet"? Right...

See you next post.

Can somebody say "Polar Bear" in German?

Hi there dear readers! Ready for another crazy journey through the endless music carousel? (this is starting nice...). Great!

Well let's go then. Can somebody answer the question in the title? No?? Ok then, go to Google Translator or search in an English-German dictionary for it, I'll wait...

Is it done yet? Have you made it? Good! Who answered "Eisbär"? Congratulations then, you're dead right and you've just won...hmmm...errrrr...I'm sure I'll think of something!! Well, "Eisbär" is exactly the song I bring you today, in a Bossa Nova version by Nouvelle Vague.

Nouvelle Vague is a french musical group led by musicians Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux and there are several lead singers (over 25!) that collaborate and lend/have lent their voices to the group. Essentially, Nouvelle Vague revamps and updates old french and other countries punk, rock and new wave hits from the 80's and 90's to excellent Lounge and Bossa Nova versions. Nouvelle Vague is a play with words with New Wave and Bossa Nova rhythms (they all mean "new tendency") from which the group draws their inspiration and, at the same time, pays homage to the iconic french cinematic movement from the 50's and 60's that became known precisely as "Nouvelle Vague". Vive la France!

The single "Eisbär" from Nouvelle Vague is a version of a great Swiss punk-rock hit from 1980 by a band called Grauzone. Nouvelle Vague's version is performed in German by a French singer with a rather Portuguese name called Marina Celeste (confused?). A quiet and beautiful girly voice, that exudes tranquility and is soul conforting. Never before has German language sounded so sexy!

Next I present to you two videos for the same song. The first one is the official Nouvelle Vague's video, but since it's sound quality is a bit poor, I give you a second video (non-official) with a significantly improved sound quality. There's a huge irony worth mentioning: the entire song speaks about polar bears and how the author would like to be a polar bear in a polar cap and right in the first few seconds of the video (more specifically at 0:16), the singer appears lied down over a... polar bear skin. Interesting!

To end this post, I'm showing you the original punk-rock and somewhat psychedelic version of "Eisbär" recorded by the Swiss group Grauzone, just for comparison. The least I can say is that Nouvelle Vague turned it completely upside down. This is what is called going from dunce to genius. My opinion of course! See you next time!
